Since 1977, 18 May has been designated International Museum Day to raise public awareness about the role museums play in society. In consonance with this year’s theme chosen by ICOM (International Council of Museums), Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition, the day will revolve around the new roles that museums are playing as active agents within their communities, as cultural hubs operating as platforms where creativity is combined with knowledge and where visitors have an opportunity to create, share and interact. As they develop as cultural centres, museums find new ways to highlight their collections, histories and legacies, creating traditions that will have new meanings for future generations and a new significance for an increasingly diverse, contemporary and global public.

CA2M will carry out its by-now traditional guided tour of its storage area, while proposing a dialogue between women from its local area of influence—the members of the Tejiendo Móstoles collective, whose work is based on a community ethic—and artworks by the women artists awarded this year at ARCOmadrid who use textiles as a medium to explore issues of the moment. This is the case of Mercedes Azpilicueta, who addresses the recovery of forgotten women artists and their work; and also of Asunción Molinos, who engages with environmental issues, starting out from the changes in agricultural production and property in specific geographical areas, which can then be extrapolated to many other places, thus evincing the conflict between natural and economic resources.
