A PROJECT TO TRANSFORM THE LIBRARY AT CA2M
CURATED BY VÍCTOR DE LAS HERAS Y CARLOS GRANADOS
The way in which exhibition languages are constructed and elaborated is the starting point for Xabier Salaberria’s project. The artist questions the purported neutrality of the white cube, together with other imaginaries of the Modern movement, thus bringing into crisis the way in which we understand the relationship between form and function.
Working across various projects, Xabier Salaberria has elaborated a space of interrelation between architecture, design and art. He subverts concepts such as function and use in order to create tensions: Is art a superfluous terrain? Does design adapt to our needs? Is the form ideologically charged? What is behind the changes in these disciplines?
Through a participative workshop with the users of the Library at CA2M, and together with the Department of Education, Salaberria will lead the creation of a collective installation that will accommodate the manifold uses that the art centre’s library is put to, in a permanent site-specific installation.
Xabier Salaberria (Donostia-San Sebastián, 1969) is a Basque sculptor who has created projects for Guggenheim Bilbao, Fundació Joan Miró, Kunsthalle Hamburg and Documenta 12.
