NADIA BARKATE AND FÁTIMA MORENO. THE LIST

This exhibition emerges as a dialogue between the artistic production of Nadia Barkate (Bilbao, 1980) and Fátima Moreno (Granada, 1980) and the collections of Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo and the ARCO Foundation, approaching drawing not merely as a technique but as a form of thinking, acting and engaging with space. The institution invited both artists to undertake a reading of the collection centred on drawing while also assuming the role of curators for the project—reconfiguring curatorial work as a more intuitive and embodied process—through a shared and subjective gaze capable of analysing their own artistic languages and identifying both affinities and points of divergence between the works of Nadia Barkate and Fátima Moreno and the pieces selected from the museum collection.

In this sense, the exhibition approaches drawing from an expanded and experiential perspective, avoiding a strictly literal reading of the medium in favour of one in which gesture, pulse and impulse emerge as central elements both in the artworks and in the shaping of the exhibition journey. From this perspective, the works selected from Museo CA2M engage in dialogue with the artists' practice through symbolic, thematic and material correspondences, generating a visual landscape infused with humour, play and a certain spontaneity.

The arrangement of the works within the gallery space also seeks to break with conventional orthogonality through accumulations, carefully orchestrated disorder and elements placed on both walls and floors. These pieces function as obstacles, signposts or interruptions within an exhibition route capable of bringing into the gallery spaces the impulsive, improvised and relational nature of drawing itself.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication featuring a selection of images of representative works by Nadia Barkate and Fátima Moreno, alongside a text by Tania Pardo, Director of Museo CA2M, exploring some of the affinities and singularities that shape this encounter between the artists.

NADIA BARKATE

 (Bilbao, 1980) lives and works in Donostia-San Sebastián. She develops her practice through drawing, writing and their inherent dynamics. She is interested in narrative, poetry, psychology and all things technical, without placing too much importance on distinguishing between them. In this way, she constructs a dense amalgam of images that asserts a world of its own. She has exhibited and collaborated with spaces as diverse as Galería Maisterra (Madrid), Raccoon Projects (Barcelona), Galeria Fermay and TACA (Palma de Mallorca), VAGA (Azores), Artium Museoa and Montehermoso (Vitoria-Gasteiz), Artiatx and Okela (Bilbao), Lítost (Prague), Westfälischer Kunstverein (Münster), the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Alhóndiga and Carreras Múgica (Bilbao), Tabakalera (Donostia-San Sebastián), Ethall and Bombón (Barcelona), and CAT (Berlin), among others. She recently joined the Department of Painting at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) as a lecturer. 

FÁTIMA MORENO

(Granada, 1980) is a visual artist. With a background in printmaking, her practice is centred on drawing and painting. Her work explores an imaginary realm situated somewhere between the dreamlike, the satirical and the psychedelic, articulated through a free and spontaneous graphic language. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Spain and Portugal, including at Galería Ehrhardt Flórez (Madrid), Galeria Zé dos Bois (Lisbon) and Galería NAVE (Lisbon). Alongside her artistic practice, she collaborates on projects in the fields of fashion, design and culture, while also teaching drawing workshops.
