MACARENA RECUERDA SHEPHERD. IF IT WERE A MOVIE

Si fuera una pelicula

SUNDAY 22 FEBRUARY, 6.30 pm

Performing arts. 60 min.

If It Were a Movie is a piece that explores the possibilities of sound in cinema to rethink the theatre scene. A sound that dramatises, fictionalises or re-signifies the images it touches, producing strangeness and humour or becoming a metaphor for travelling from the plausible to the unreal. This overlaying of narrative elements—sound linked to cinema and the stage—reveals the potential of both. Sound as a generator of unlimited possibilities and the stage with its infinite code of representation. If It Were a Movie never becomes a movie because it lacks image: the image projected onto the fourth wall of our imagination. Meanwhile, we watch a concert of objects officiated by Macarena Recuerda and her collaborator George Marinov, which unfolds like a sound collage crafted out of cuttings from our collective memory.

Macarena Recuerda is a performer, theatre director and researcher with Sevillian roots and now based in the north of Spain. She is trained in the performing arts, drama and dance. Although she has a degree from the Institut del Teatre, she is primarily interested in participatory projects that aim to create new forms of encounter through art. Since 2012 her research has centred on the role of the spectator. She invents new spaces to play, create and think in company. Her research is divided between two lines of work: language on stage; and participatory and pedagogical spaces. She has directed and performed the pieces The Watching Machine, Cosa. Intervenir un cuerpo and ¡Ay! ¡Ya!, and she has created different projects in collaboration with the artists Sofía Asencio, Idurre Azkue, David Franch, Txalo Toloza and Vicente Arlandis. In 2022 she took part in El Cine Rev[b]elado with That’s the Story of My Life.

George Marinov is a theatre director, lighting designer, sound recordist and performer. He has a degree in Theatre Direction and Performance of Text-Based Theatre from the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (RESAD) in Madrid. He also took the Tecnica della Rappresentazione course at Scula Cónia (Cesena Italy), directed by Claudia Castellucci. His theatrical pieces include: HÄXAN (2025), premiered at the Madrid Autumn Festival; Ejercicios militares para confundir éxtasis con agonía (2023); Il senso della Carne (2020) as artist-in-residence (Catalysi) for the company Societas Raffaello Sanzio (Italy); and Nidos de Hormigón (2019). Since 2023 he has been collaborating with Macarena Recuerda on different productions.
