LUBRICÁN. JULIA SPÍNOLA
CURATED BY BEATRIZ HERRÁEZ
Julia Spínola (Madrid, 1979) develops her practice across the fields of sculpture and drawing. In her works, the continuous references to text and to performance give rise to systems of correspondences that operate as approximations to a single theme based on the relations set in place between figures, objects and movements. If it were viewed as a form of writing, her work would lack any underlying grammar, challenging language and generating a sense of overflow. Spínola’s work brings to mind a brand of calligraphy in which the sentient and the mental are inseparable, and whose processes involve applying rules and rhythms to the body’s basic movements and routines.
This is the first individual exhibition of the artist’s practice in a Spanish institution. Her work has been seen at etHall, Barcelona (2017); Halfhouse, Barcelona (2016); Kunsthalle Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo (2015); La Panera, Lleida (2015); Komplot, Brussels (2015); La Casa Encendida, Madrid, (2014); Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid (2014) and The Mews, London (2013). Spínola’s work is included in the collections of Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Madrid; Fundación Marcelino Botín, Santander; CA2M; La Panera, Lleida; and Fundación Montenmedio/La Casa Encendida, Madrid.
