THIS - HASN'T - HAPPENED

Visuality and - being - are the main axes around which this show is organized. The first construction remits strictly to the eye, and to the optical-chemical, now and - increasingly - digital device, through which images that have been gradually stripped of their photographic nature and its processes are produced. One of the questions underlying this reflection resides in whether what we call photography is still photography, or whether it is already something else.

More than ever before, today images - no longer only photographic, but those produced digitally, as well as video - are erected and deploy all their power as a kind of machines of self-production, where subjectivity and objectivity cross paths. Therefore, this is about photography, and about all the techniques (digital photography, slides, installations) which exceed it, put to work to produce nothing else but a kind of vanishing point outlook on the world.

On the other hand, the second axis, tightly connected to the previous one, that of ontology, of being, problematizes the relationship between the artists, the works that inform this collective exhibition, and the reading withing the present, since in the works we see themes such as memory, identity traces, and the colonial, the reflection on the very construction of the imaginary: a time and a scenario where the artist appears to dissolve.

The technical question associated with the production of the image, and to the paradoxes of the production of one's own or a collective narrative within a temporality takes us back to that question already asked by Roland Barthes: "Has this been possible?". A shift on the question of images, their apparent weakness, and their enormous power, which remains on the surface and in an eternal cultural construction - maybe - for the fade-out.

The third element in play or in the background, in which both axes (visuality and subjectivity) are set in scene, is the geographical and conceptual trace which we call "Latin America", a space on which an otherness is still being projected. This background is also questioned and problematized, since an outlook from Latin America can only be speculative for whoever can see themselves and reflect themselves there: Spain and Portugal.
