  • This museum space located in Móstoles presents Calero’s Busy Looking for Soursops, which examines the search for identity and a sense of belonging.
  • Sierra, in turn, will show 1502 Persons Facing the Wall with references to the minimalism, conceptual art and performance from the 1960s and 1970s.

28 September 2024.- Today the Community of Madrid is opening the new season of the Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo in Móstoles with exhibitions by the artists Sol Calero and Santiago Sierra, who are presenting Busy Looking for Soursops and 1502 Persons Facing the Wall, respectively.

Curated by Tania Pardo, the show by the Venezuelan artist Sol Calero is her first solo exhibition in a Madrid institution. It features some of the hallmarks of her works, such as her interest in architecture and design; murals in which fruits and vegetation become graphic resources with bright colours; and votive offerings, sculptures that refer to folklore and folk beliefs.

In her work, the artist combines materials ranging from furniture to textiles, mosaics and videos to explore the illusion of the Caribbean as a paradise. The goal of this strategy is to disarm spectators with a friendly, playful atmosphere. This exhibition will be at the museum until 5 January 2025.

Likewise, the show 1502 Persons Facing the Wall by the Madrid-based artist Santiago Sierra, curated by Alexis Callado, will be at the CA2M Museum until 2 February 2025. In it, the artist captures images of citizens but as reverse portraits that nullify the subject’s identity. He has used this theme to create a career which displays his ability to act on the minimalism, conceptual art and performance of the 1960s and 1970s. His works are characterised by revealing the power networks that lead to worker alienation and exploitation, injustice, violence and discrimination. This project will continue in a second chapter in the Museo Helga de Alvear in Cáceres starting on 16 May 2025, where it will be extended to include new works created just for the museum along with others belonging to the Helga de Alvear Collection.
