The Witness is the title of Teresa Margolles’ exhibition at the CA2M MUSEUM, curated by María Inés Rodríguez. The exhibition provides an overview of her recent work via a series of work produced over the last five years. It sends us on a circular path, both real and figurative, that loops around the recent history of Ciudad Juárez.
Firstly, it examines its emergence as a thriving city on the boundary between the US and Mexico. A prosperity that must have come from its position on the border and due to the strong, consumerist economy of the north. Next is the disappointment created by the crumbling dream of an idyllic future. The third and final stage sends a message of hope: that despite everything, The Witness, the metaphorical tree that gives its name to the exhibition, endures and is able to tell the story. And it can tell the story because it has seen and experienced it.
