Continuing the line of work begin in 2014, El cine rev[b]elado has put together a programme of activities on audiovisual performance and cinema’s interconnections with other disciplines, engaging with the cinematographic experience beyond the conventional darkened film theatre and the screened image. Instead, here we will be interrelating and transforming it in order to activate an audiovisual-based experience that questions not just its own language but also its whole structure and logistics.

Similar to previous iterations of this programme, we are presenting a range of transversal projects that blend film and cinema with sound art, new media, radio, architecture and dance. Taking on board the situation of the pandemic and also as a kind of tribute to the origins of this programme, this year we are focused entirely on the local fabric with a view to strengthening the bonds with the territory.

Our goal is to give our audience a chance to share some of the most outstanding contemporary audiovisual and performance-based works. We will be taking a closer look at and lending a particular focus to the local scene, ensuring a continuity with local artists and agents after Covid-19. In addition, most of these projects are being debuted for the first time in Madrid, thus reinforcing El cine rev[b]elado’s role as a key event in the performing arts and in the cultural calendar of the Region of Madrid during the winter season. This year we are celebrating the project’s fifth edition at CA2M, no better moment to meet up, come together again, reflect on the current situation and continue to work together.

Playtime Audiovisuales. A cultural management platform founded by Natalia Piñuel and Enrique Piñuel in 2007, dedicated to contemporary art practices, undertaking curatorial projects for art centres and cultural institutions like Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Azkuna Zentroa, MUSAC, Instituto Cervantes, Centro Cultural de España in Mexico and Tabakalera. Playtime Audiovisuales has also worked with film and music festivals. Its many projects include “Contemporary Visions: New Cinema and Video in Spain” held at Domus Artium 2002 (DA2) in Salamanca since 2013; the multidisciplinary festival “She Makes Noise” at La Casa Encendida in Madrid since 2015 which focuses on the role of women and non-binary identities in electronic music and audiovisual experimentation; and “El Cine Rev[b]elado”, the performance-based programme at Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M) in Móstoles, Madrid, since 2014. They regularly collaborate with various mass media and as teachers.

Macarena Recuerda Shepherd

This performance by Macarena Recuerda takes its name from a song by the Velvet Underground. In it she presents an audiovisual autobiography narrated with stop-motion animation using objects. The film is created live like a series of flashbacks and archives open to the past, with all the ups and downs of a life which the viewer has to try to put together. “A family album without a family”, in the words of the artist, created using a variety of visual supports. That’s the Story of My Life revisits a work recovered from a successful tour in 2011, examining the role of memory drawn from painting, photographic and cinematographic images that foreshadows all her later work in the performing arts, reflecting on the representation and construction of the image through the body and gestures. This work has been presented in Spain, Italy, Colombia and Portugal. Its showing at El cine Rev[b]elado also marks an anniversary and reencounter with the text that revealed it ten years ago and now opens other new paths.

Macarena Recuerda Shepherd is the pseudonym that Lidia Zoilo González has been working under for the last ten years in the visual and performing arts, creating many highly diverse works, some of them in collaboration with organizations and bodies like Teatre Lliure, Antic Teatre, Festival NEO, Bilbao Arte and Festival Grec. She has also worked with renowned performing artists like Txalo Toloza, Amalia Fernández, Amanda Pola and Vicente Arlandis. In 2008 she founded the Estraperlo collective, a platform for new artists who are hard to label.

Dúo Prismáticas (Aitziber Olaskoaga & Pilar Monsell).

Historically, women’s work has been invisibilized and undervalued. The majority of work with textiles and sewing was done by women who were paid low wages under precarious working conditions. With a text by Alexander Kluge, Dúo Prismáticas recovers one of the beginnings of the birth of cinematograph to try to accommodate the possibilities of a path that was never trodden, asking the question: What would have happened if that new projection machine had also included a sewing feature, a seeing-sewing machine? With this project, they propose building an artistic device that allows you to combine two things that were previously separated (film and sewing) and which can give rise to a travelling space of enunciation, voicing demands, self-representation and dialogue between women workers in different industrial sectors, especially audiovisuals and textiles.
Project developed during the BAICC residency at LIFT Toronto in conjunction with the S8 Muestra de Cine Periférico film festival in La Coruña and the support of Acción Cultural Española.

Pilar Monsell is a filmmaker, editor and visual artist. She founded the production company, Proxémica, which produced her first feature film África 815, for which has won many international awards. Since 2016, Monsell has been working on a process-based project in analogue photography and film which gave rise to the exhibition Cuidadoras de patios: lo íntimo-público, the installation Córdoba 1652 in 2017 and the exhibition programme Casandra y las mujeres olvidadas. In 2017, she had her first solo show, Pilar Monsell: ÁFRICA815, paraíso perdido, curated by Valentín Roma at La Virreina - Centro de la Imagen de Barcelona. Pilar is currently part of Contravisiones, a laboratory researching the performativity of images.

Aitziber Olaskoaga is a visual artist who works with video as well as analogue formats to undertake documentary film projects. She's currently studying the Film and Video Master Program at California Institute of the Arts thanks to a fellowship from the university, where she works as the lead projectionist. Her first medium-length film, La sonrisa telefónica, won several awards at international film festivals. Her second film as a director, No.Stop was premiered at the Visions Du Reel festival in 2021.

Copoazú four-hour workshop

La compañía de artes vivas AzkonaToloza.

The performing arts company will lead a collaborative workshop for four people with a view to their participation in the Copoazú project at El Cine Rev[b]elado.

The main requisite to take part is to have a good voice for reading aloud and to have no fear of microphones and audiences. No other prior experience is required. The four people chosen to take part will perform in the theatre piece to be presented on Sunday 20 February at 6:30 pm at CA2M.

Azkona & Toloza

In 2016, Txalo Toloza presented the documentary theatre piece called Pacífico #1 - América es un mar con otro nombre at the second El cine rev[b]elado. The project and accompanying research into decolonial processes since evolved into Teatro Amazonas which analyses new forms of current colonialism, this time based on two gigantic cultural and sports installations in the Amazon. The installation speaks to us of two mammoth infrastructures that call Herzog to mind: the Amazon Theatre and the Arena da Amazônia football stadium. However, the intention is not to turn them into the focal point but to use them to illustrate the local bourgeoisie’s hunger for wealth, the cycle of boom and bust of industrial development in the region, and the many economic interests that favour the destruction of the planet’s greatest rainforest.

For CA2M, and for the first time in Madrid, Azcona & Toloza presents a preview, in the form of an independent cinematographic essay, of all that will take place in the Amazon Theatre and to do so the Azcona-Toloza family (Txalo, Laida and Lur) will bring on board the invaluable assistance of four guests who have previously worked on the dramaturgy with them in a workshop. The sound element of the performance will be recorded and available on a podcast in the CA2M Soundcloud.

This is the latest project by Txalo Toloza and Laida Azcona, a duo of artists with a special interest in documentary forms of theatre, the infinite possibilities of poetry and visual anthropology, low-fi video-creation, performance and movement. Their most recent creations focus on a rereading of official history and documentary creation conceived for the stage. Understanding the stage as the living room of a home, an opera theatre or the vastness of high plateau salt flats. They create projects jointly and separately and have also worked with other artists, such as the performer Sonia Gómez, the stage director Roger Bernat and the Mexican documentary theatre company Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol.

“Oh, another thing! This is the back door to The City (or from above, freefalling through a skylight). These are versions of a place seen or heard and then (re)built in fragments; a vague memory, an imagined image. The City is everything that goes through the head of a person imagining it… in fits and starts. And so The City is always subjective, often subsidiary and, if we’re lucky, shared by us all.”

In The City, Verónica Navas invokes an intimate experience around an illuminated table, a shared space that receives, diffuses and exchanges information. We recognize it as a table-object, but in fact it is a screen for a film shared in common by the audience, a performer and the urban setting. On this narrative surface, a composition is orchestrated for nine spectators made from live and deferred projections and combined with sheets of paper that, depending on how they are placed and read, give it an architectural almost 3D volume. Verónica intervenes, narrating possible stories, offering gazes and suggesting new points of view. “Start with the small and continue with the small” can be read on a piece of paper held diagonally during a moment in the piece. The City is precisely that: focusing the gaze on small traces, observing and doing so from a distance that almost allows you to touch its fragility and great power. The nine chairs are arranged around it to ensure a close experience, to return from the distance of the pandemic, to be together again and to be part of all the narratives of fiction that happen before our eyes.

Verónica Navas Ramírez works transversely across the performing arts and their intersections with audiovisuals, writing and comics, focusing on documentaries, the status of the spectator and relational aesthetics, site-specificity, field recordings, cityscapes and words. She has presented her on-stage works at festivals such as Temporada Alta en Iberoamérica, Grec Festival in Barcelona, Festival TNT – Terrassa Noves Tendències, Antic Teatre or SÂLMON Festival, among others. Off the stage she works in theatre communication, audiovisual scriptwriting and collective processes of artistic support and learning in schools and education.

Following the line of work begun in 2014, Cinema Revealed has organized a range of different activities revolving around audiovisual performance and the interrelationship between film and other disciplines.
