he performance Quarter of an Hour of Metaphysical Culture is a presentation of physical training created from a poem by the same name by the Romanian poet Ghérasim Luca. The goal is to situate the metaphysical ideas contained within the poem (life, death, emptiness, anxiety, ideas, shivers), without any drama, based on a repetition of physical and sound exercises. The poet provides the “meta” and the performers the “physical”.

This performance is the first piece in a wider collection within the project La Conquista de lo Inútil (The Conquest of the Useless), which examines what we normally consider as unimportant, ineffective or unproductive. https://vimeo.com/user12478543/

Oscar Gómez Mata was born in San Sebastian, and lives and works in Geneva. He is an actor, director, and also playwright and scenographer, who started out working in the theatre in Spain in 1987. He was a cofounder of the Legaleón-T company, with whom he created shows until 1996. In Geneva in 1997, he founded the L’Alakran company where he has conceived, written and directed various shows.

Admission free while places last

The performance is part of El Lugar Sin Límites, a project exploring two common ideas: the idea of home and the idea of story. Set in conflict within the space of the performance, the aim is to make them clash together, producing sounds, sparks and unexpected encounters. For this purpose, artists were invited to provide voices, bodies and experiences to this ongoing reflection.

This year the idea is to observe the construction of a place to inhabit, a place to sit, observe, speak and listen. To be able to make a home together, to guide us through a territory that we decide together, to build a space for meeting and, in addition, to still believe in the possibility of continuing to tell our story to one another.

The programme is accompanied by places for reflection and encounter for artists and between artists and the audience.

During this 21-hour theoretical course, key aspects of contemporary art will be openly discussed in order to understand and interpret contemporary art: from the death of the author and the crisis of the subject to the end of meta-narratives and the emergence of art as critical thinking.

While we raise the main existing issues in current art, we will analyze the possibility of using images as useful resources to be used in the classroom (and not only in Art History classes): the image is built and proposed by the artist as an artifact or a machine which creates discourses.

Through 7 sessions of 3 hours, professionals of art from different creative fields (museums, artistic practices, scholars) will deal with different subjects.

Sessions will be divided into two parts: a theoretical discussion based on reading materials followed by practical cases and exercises of images analysis.

Attendees will receive a 2-credit certificate issued by Consejería de Educación de la Comunidad de Madrid.

By David Cortés, Marta de Gonzalo and Pablo Martínez.

The course will take place at IES Prado Santo Domingo in Alcorcón.

Pere Faura (Barcelona, 1980) is a dancer and choreographer. He has studied music, theatre, ballet and audiovisual communication. Between 2002 and 2006, he studied choreography at the School for New Dance and Development in Amsterdam. In 2009 he started the Amsterdam Master of Choreography at Amsterdam School for the Arts (AHK). He has participated in several projects as a dancer with choreographers like Jérôme Bel (The show must go on) and Ivana Muller (While we were holding it together) and has worked in many projects as a choreographer.

After some warm-up exercises to stir physical conscience and creative imaginary, we will study the elements implied in a striptease that are also present in eductive action, such as the lenguage of suggestion, the power of persuasion or the construction of illusion in order to perform poetic stripteases as an artistic and political practice to lay bare our own habits and cover them with new tools and landscapes.

With this 20-hour workshop the CA2M keeps on investigating education and educative uses of the body and the language of performance. Indeed, one of the lines of work of the Centre is to focuse on the body as a place to build knowledge. Guided by Pere Faura, we will reflect on education and art as political practices intending to trigger new impulses and searches for new forms of imagination not yet under control.
