Families

Gentle fold, slow cooked is an exercise that revolves around pausing. Targeted at families who visit the Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, the activity consists of five sessions where the aim is to transform the museum into a living laboratory by activating the creative role of audiences. In this fortnightly programme, the acts of playing and testing will merge with the institutional space as we harness all three to unlearn haste and slow down time.

Taking the body as the starting point, each session will be articulated around a particular sense, enabling us to approach sight through contemplation, touch through creation, smell through memory, taste through food and hearing through expecting. The proposed variations of the senses will give us tools to embrace resting and a type of non-productive action in a creative manner.

The programme will close with a final collective gathering where we will pool our shared experiences and discoveries.

PROGRAMME

  • Slow blinking. Saturday, 4 October: 5.00–7.00 pm

Contemplation—SIGHT—as a break with productivity and work. Observing without expectation, being open to surprises and chance encounters: to the plant growing between the cracks in the pavement or the cloud shaped like an ostrich.

  • Drawing. Saturday, 18 October: 5.00–7.00 pm

Making—TOUCH—through play and repetition, as a creativity wake-up. Making something that serves no purpose and defending its uselessness. Making and unmaking. Playing with the scraps.

  • Caressing and cuddling. Saturday, 8 November: 11.30–1.30 pm

Memory—SMELL—as roots, collective imagination and belonging. Poking our little noses through the cracks of time. How do smells connect us to recollections?

  • The fold on the table. Saturday, 15 November: 11.30–1.30 pm

Eating—TASTE—as a facilitator of spaces for gathering and interpersonal development.  Sharing. Everyone with their own history and their own way of breaking bread.

  • Ssssssssshhhhhh. Saturday, 29 November: 11.30–1.30 pm

Expecting—HEARING—as an active listening exercise and concentration game. The pretext for exposing ourselves to other narratives and other lives in resistance. What do your ears hear while you take a nap?

  • The last best night. Neither the last, nor the best, nor at night. Vol. III. Saturday, 13 December: 5.00–7.00 pm

A drop-in session, open to anyone who wants to come and share the discoveries made during the programme. A collective closure to pool shared experiences and the lessons learned along the way.

This programme is conceived as a shared itinerary. When assigning places, we’ll therefore give priority to families that can join us for most of the sessions. We want to create a group that grows together, discovering and enjoying every gathering.

Regarding ages, if your family includes little ones, they are welcome to join us. We’ll do our best to make them feel comfortable and share this creative space with them.

If places become available as the activity progresses, we’ll contact people on the waiting list to find out if they are still interested in signing up.

POMPA is a collective management, curating and cultural creation project developed by Mara Sannia and Irene Aguilera Martín. Exploring the activation of enjoyment through pausing and resting, it was founded as a self-management initiative in 2021 with the aim of using management and cultural mediation tools in creative and art production processes through slow, situated rhythms. In addition to continuing their practical research on resting as a tool and creative trigger, Mara and Irene pursue the creation of new spaces for production, encounters, exhibitions and celebrations, spaces that are critical and reflective as well as unhurried and accessible.

Let the drum roll start, the fans flutter and the families get ready, because the festival is about to begin!

The museum is turning into a square, a place of revelry, a meeting point, and it’s opening its doors two at a time to welcome all families in a celebration filled with joy, creativity and unforgettable moments. Welcome to the big celebration of the year!

Because doing needlework and dancing—it’s all about getting started… Let’s gather to celebrate what we’ve shared, what we’ve created and what we’ve experienced! This celebration brings together everyone we’ve worked with throughout the year to close the season enthusiastically with the proposals of the artists who have unquestionably nailed it!

Stars of this big celebration:

Baiven with the kids from ‘Dancing the Neighbourhood’ (Alba Sáenz-López Aumente and Mar Sáenz-López Aumente) have held the Dancing the Neighbourhood workshop on Tuesday afternoons throughout the entire school year. It’s a meeting point for neighbourhood kids where they have discovered dance in unexpected places, expanding their view of movement in the world. What might they be preparing for us for this occasion?

Adriana Reyes and Goya Batalla Batalla have held the From those clays, these seams workshop for nursery and primary school kids, bringing boxes filled with thread, yarn and thimbles, filled with stories they have shared around the pleasure of embroidery. What stories are concealed in those thimbles?

Tania Arias Winogradow, with whom we’ve built real nests where you can rest inside the museum, accompanied by Santiago Rapallo and Eleni Chaidemenaki, suggest a very special afternoon snack for this festive day. Do we really always have to eat sitting around a table?

And now… raise the curtain, play the music and make sure everyone’s here! Because this celebration is not only a party; it’s an homage to everything we’ve experienced. Thanks for stitching this year together with us! See you next year—and keep up this shared joy!

We are celebrating the arrival of summer on 14 June, and we want to invite you to participate. It will be a kind of celebration where you can remember and enjoy a different kind of evening. We are inviting you to participate in this festival, led by the artists with whom we’ve worked this year in the families project.

We’ll begin with Ángela Segovia and Luz Prado, with whom we’ve created new lullabies in the workshop entitled ‘Donde el tigre se come a los niños’ [Where the Tiger Eats the Children], this time to get mothers to sleep. We’ll close our eyes, and perhaps someone will whisper something in our ear. We may sing or recall the songs from our childhood, or perhaps not because they’ve changed and now there are other songs.

This happened with Ruiseñora in the workshop called ‘Las canciones y los dulces. Mi casa sin patio’ [Songs and Sweets. My House without a Courtyard], in which the popular Spanish children’s song ‘El patio de mi casa’ [The Courtyard of my House] will never be the same again. Now, after the workshops we’ve held, this popular courtyard has a tree that blossoms in the autumn, as well as a Jacuzzi, bologna and pickles.

After that, for dessert, we’ll have De fruta, pastel—we’ll sample the sweetness of dulce de leche, the glazed texture of Portillo pastries and the scent of the honey flowers that flavoured our childhood. And with the aftertaste of so many memories still in our mouths, after dinner we’ll listen to Ruiseñora, who will hold a concert on the museum’s terrace, where her songs will also seem familiar yet different.

Children’s songs serve as the common thread of memories, generations and lives separated in space and time. They are clearly meant to be fun, but they can also be educational. What do children’s folk songs teach us? What reality do they reflect? We are not trying to constrain creativity but instead aim to analyse what the lyrics of these songs from another era say, a time when girls were frightened away by spiders, men put their wives in a pumpkin shell, and ladies trotted but gentlemen galloped.[AS1] 

We’ll mix elderly people’s memories and young people’s intuition to turn those perennial children’s songs into songs of our lives today by changing the lyrics, trying out new instruments and inventing a dance for any age. We’ll have fun with the entire family as we use music and play to help us reconsider those intergenerational tunes and make them more ours, more open, more contemporary, in a bid to give them many more years of life.

NOTE:  We recommend this activity for children aged 5 and older. However, any younger children in your group/family are more than welcome. We will try to adapt the pace to all participants.

In 2016, Atilio González and Elia Maqueda set up a group (Ruiseñora) and had a daughter, and these two events have largely determined their lives since then. They have published several records on the Raso Estudio label, a mix of electronic and traditional music, the project’s hallmark and one of the first in the new line of work to revive folklore by looking at the past in order to face the future. They have held family concerts with audiences and often hold concerts for their own family (they always compose, rehearse and record at home). They have also coordinated workshops and artistic projects in museums like the Reina Sofía and the Vostell Malpartida.

In this programme, we are inviting different artistic collectives who are families to imagine the shared space where they can pool their creative processes and interests and create together with other people, a space where age and skill don’t matter, a new space-time where you can share with your people, neighbours, chosen families, grandparents, grandchildren.

Luz Prado (Málaga, 1985) Musician, violinist and performer. She lives nomadically, working on the stage through sound. Her practice is based on a constant dialogue with the violin and the encounter with other artists through DIY, dance and noise.

Ángela Segovia (Las Navas del Marqués, 1987) I write as much as I can. I have been publishing with the La uña rota publishing house for years. I think of writing as an open space, or rather, I make an effort not to close it; perhaps that's why I tend to mix genres and disciplines, although for me it's really all the same thing, just writing. Always writing.

Kept in the finest cabinets of the most ostentatious (and pretentious) homes are the most exclusive sets of dinnerware. Such elegant place settings are only brought out on special occasions for use with great refinement to impress the most distinguished guests. Each item is designed and chosen for its function, and each has its own ritual regarding use, and they include dinner plates, soup bowls, soup tureens, gravy boats, salad bowls and platters of various sizes. 

This workshop will provide us with the privilege and enjoyment of working together with the artist Saelia Aparicio to create a unique set of exclusive dinnerware designed by and for the boys and girls of the Móstoles Children’s Home, who have their meals together daily.

The diners will design exclusive pieces, which may be a plate with a secret compartment where broccoli or fish can be hidden without being discovered, a spectacular dish whose contents can be shared with several children at the same time, carving tools with which to create ephemeral works of art with leftover food, a plate with a handle to comfortably carry delicious food from one table to another table, or perhaps a special plate with a barrier to prevent others from stealing chips; who knows? Textiles may be included, such as a refined tablecloth on which to wipe one’s mouth, because, as we know, table manners are very important.

 

Saelia Aparicio was born on a secret island in 1982 and lives and works in the United Kingdom. Her work is multidisciplinary, with a recent tendency towards functional sculpture guided by her interest in including senses other than sight in her work.

Some of her most recent projects include works for Jerwood Survey 2, in London; Paraiso Extraño at MUSAC, Leon; We Belong to Each Other at Carlier Gebauer, Berlin; Generaciones 2019; and The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish, curated by the Serpentine Gallery, London.

In May several birthdays are celebrated in Madrid, and we are going to make a gift-tribute to our region. Through two workshops, the artist Clara Moreno Cela shows the public the process of her research on the identity of Madrid. In order for everyone to enjoy this activity, the first day is aimed at families, and the second and third days are aimed at teenagers and adults.

During the two get-togethers we will explore our relationship with the city through music, performance and games in workshops that aim to be a reunion with other people, and is also outdoor fun that makes the most of our terrace. A Chotistón to commemorate the festivities and traditional festivals – called verbenas – that are celebrated on these particular days. A celebration that also belongs to Móstoles – the 2nd of May – that has given us our name; a festivity we want to partake in as spring awakes.

During this workshop we will think, sing and dance about the region we live in. What do we like most about Madrid? What would we change? How would we make it more ours? What if we could answer these questions by having a super-quick party? Sign up with your family and come to the museum’s terrace. Together, we’ll create a collective imagination of Madrid by dancing and singing.

Clara Moreno Cela (1993, Madrid) is the daughter of woman who is a bookseller, artist and cultural mediator. Her work bounds between drawing, performance and music, and she loves using literature as a starting point for the creative process. Her solo musical project, called Clara te canta (Clara Sings for You), brings all her passions to light in a straightforward punk way. She likes producing pieces using everyday things and pours her energy into thinking about the function of intuition in Art, the relationships between different species, and supermarket conversations.

FLIC is an arts and literature festival for the whole family which is celebrating its 9th year in Barcelona, Vic and Móstoles. With its distinct marriage of art and literature, FLIC showcases a number of playful ideas that invite us to take part in unusual literary experiences, to join creative workshops, to move to the rhythm of rhymes and urban dance, to dance reading, to read dancing … and everything accompanied by a pile of books.

We will meet Emily Hughes, the author of the poster for this ninth edition of the festival and the award-winning illustration album Wild, who will lead a family workshop. We can also see La Tomasa, a show by the Brodas Bros hip-hop crew, who will reinterpret the repertoire of oral tradition with Lorcian reminiscences, dancing to the tune of Tutting, Waving, Liquid Dance, Locking, Body Percussion and Popping. Comic lovers can join the workshop by José Ja Ja Ja, an artist specialized in narrative drawings, comics and books. And La Diurna de Pere Faura invites us to dance a book in family: What would happen if we use the tools of dance to write, to describe or read the object contained in the story?

This activity is continuing online among all participants.

We are going to build a fort in the middle of the hall in the Children’s Home in Móstoles. For the floor we will use mattresses, for the ceiling we will hang sheets with clothes pegs and we will build walls with piles of pillows so that nobody can see what we are doing inside.

Once a month, different artists will be invited inside this space to that they can share their practices with us. The programme for The Fort will include dance, sound and projections and it will have its own set of rules: the only things allowed inside are what we like and what we don’t like have to be left outside.

We invite you to bid farewell to 2019 with this exciting audiovisual event based on sound improvisation and projected images. Everything is brought together in an unreal Dada-like retrofuturist atmosphere combined with live experimentation by the multi-instrumentalist Severine Beata and the visual artist Beatriz Sánchez.

Together with Severine and Beatriz we will transform aluminium foil into thunder, pinecones into fire and tin cans into beats. Bring with you whatever you can find at home that we can use collectively to create a soundscape to accompany a series of visual games that arise from all kinds of gadgets: photos, objects, dolls, textures, engines...

Severine Beata is a multi-instrumentalist who experiments with the western concert flute, saxophone, synthesizer, drum machines, vocals... She is currently based in Andalusia, where she combines her work as a teacher with concerts and sound research.

Beatriz Sánchez is a drawing artist, performer, audiovisual creator and digital activist who works on many different levels, analysing the impact that heteronormative discourses and the information society have on us.
