There are unused ceramic kilns in the storeroom for the sculpture workshop at the Europa secondary school. When we asked about them we were told that, back in the early 1990s, a group of teachers managed to introduce a Visual Arts course at the school. They spoke nostalgically about when the arts building was built and about the long teachers’ meetings to discuss experimental ideas they would introduce in the classrooms.

It strikes us as incredibly important to try to bring back this passion, especially at a time when art is being pushed out of the curriculum at schools. This year we want to start a project together with José Luis, Mercedes and Carmen (art teachers at the Europa secondary school) so that the students can create their own space for creativity. A place where they can turn on the kilns once again, increase the number of hours in creating, and defend the importance of art.

PHASE ONE: collaboration project between the CA2M library, Education department and IES Europa secondary school

A box of fanzines published by women, a shelf of books classified by weight or by colour, an envelope with minimum publications... A library can be almost anything.

This school year, along with Sonia and Andrea, the librarians at CA2M, we will begin a collaborative project to create an archive of art publications with art students at IES Europa secondary school: a strange, unsuspected library created from holdings discarded from the CA2M library. Students will take discarded books, catalogues and fanzines on a journey to the art classes at IES Europa. Once they find themselves in their new emplacement, we will start to think about and construct a collective archive where we will bring into question the conventional logic of a library in order to create a new archive narrative from materials which were initially rejected and which therefore are situated, from the outset, against the grain. The project seeks to develop new possibilities from creativity and resistance, to bring students into closer contact with contemporary creation and to create new bonds of collaboration between departments and institutions. The first activity will be a three-day workshop to create furniture in which we will jointly design and build an artefact or piece of furniture that will serve as both transport container and display case for the publications.

PHASE TWO: publishing with nothing

During the recent confinement we wanted to continue developing this project, even at a distance. For that purpose, we invited Andrea Galaxina to come up with a proposal to send to students. Taking the form of a tutorial, Andrea prepared a fanzine to explore the creative possibilities of self-publishing.

“In these strange times we are going through, when you cannot leave home to buy things, or perhaps you cannot leave home at all, it is important to realize that the materials we have at hand can open doors to fascinating worlds that perhaps, during our everyday lives, we don’t pay any real attention to. To create with nothing is a political and transformative action. And so too is publishing with nothing. The most subversive way of publishing in history is the fanzine. Furthermore, publishing fanzines allows us to expand our creativity. But we can also turn it into a vehicle to connect with others. Now that our interpersonal relationships have been seriously affected, we can take advantage of this state of emergency to introduce new ways of expressing ourselves and communicating with one another. That’s why in this guide I am going to show you how to make a fanzine with things that you probably have ready access to during confinement: ordinary everyday stationary materials with which we can nonetheless do extraordinary things. I will also give you a brief recap of the history and philosophy behind it and how to distribute our creations without leaving home".

The Autoplacer festival, the self-publishing music event held every year at CA2M since 2010, is back again this year on Saturday 27 November. This year the festival will focus on defending the creative and relational potential of the underground Spanish scene and its discourses in a series of concerts by independent groups and soloists.

The festival returns again lending support to various guest invited projects that promote concepts of self-publishing, self-distribution and collaborative networks in disciplines like comics, fanzines and illustration, among others.

In addition, Autoplacer and CA2M are once again organizing the Autoplacer Roughcuts competition. Growing in stature with every passing year, it is a platform presenting a major pool of talented young groups starting out on the scene, lending greater visibility to the diversity of music beyond the codes set in place by the industry and formula radio.

In such a fraught moment for live music as the present, projects like Autoplacer, in which institutions and the music scene join forces around concepts such as care, respect and mutual support, provide a big stimulus for contemporary creation. Let’s say it loud and proud: Long live Autoplacer!

AMOR BUTANO

Butano

Image: spectrogram, the usual way of cleaning soundtracks of noises that get into recordings and which are detected on the basis of colours of different intensity and place on the spectrum.

In the summer of 1959 the Estonian non-fiction film producer and opera singer Friedrich Jürgenson and his partner tried to record the birdsong of a finch in order to use it in one of their documentaries. In the forest near their home Friedrich placed a tape recorder and remained silent as he tried to record the birdsong. On returning home, he played back what he had recorded.

The sound was clean and clear, the wind, the leaves as they moved, the song of the finch, but... there was something else. On the recording he could also hear a human voice imitating the sound of the finch which then started talking in Norwegian, commenting on the birdsong. Jürgenson supposed that it must have been someone who was also in the forest at the time who he had not been aware of. So, the following day he returned to the forest, but first checking the area to ensure that there was nobody about, and once again he placed the tape recorder beside the finch’s nest. When he returned home satisfied, Friedrich played back the recording. This time there was no one whistling but there was a voice. A voice which he recognized as his own dead mother calling him. Friedel … my little Friedel …. Can you hear me?

In this two-day workshop we will experiment with the boundaries between art and magic in order to defy the logic of our surrounding world.

A workshop led by Raisa Maudit, a multidisciplinary artist whose work is defined by representations of individual and collective desires, needs and expectations in conflict with socio-political standards, generating experiences that are transformed into little acts of subversion.

This workshop is within the scope of the CA2M long-term activities developed for  educational centers, in particular with those schools surrounding CA2M, with the intent to strengthen collaboration ties with diverse educational agents. For a second year, the activity targets third year students from primary education schools closest to CA2M. This time, La Sonidera will lead this project.

In a society with an audiovisual, radio and sound predominance introduced as exploring means that may provide new sensorial and creative new experiences, this workshop proposed to recover the so popular radio-plays from the 60´ to work aspects such as identity, gender or reality construction. Students from Beato Simón de Rojas will practice listening in search of new perception means. They will also invent stories to be performed using their voices and homemade music and sound effects, working with the body and presence. Through these stories, they could imagine different worlds while develop their capacity to question already-formed ideas about the creation of sound spaces.

La Sonidera is an Ángeles Oliva & Toña Medina´s creation, where they both work in the radio creative field. Thought their radio performances (radio-works designed to be performance with the public), they investigate issues like fears, genders or surviving. Their interest in sound experimentation has taken them to bring back the soundman figure, that person in charge of making the sound effects in radio soap operas, giving a home-made atmosphere to stories with any kind of objects. They claim the radio warmth and its capacity to create mental images as unique means to generate reflection spaces.
